Review Your Internet Banking Password

As online and SMS scams become more and more sophisticated, it is a good time to check and consider updating your passwords.

Why is it important to review your passwords?

These days, with many websites requiring an account to be set up, it is easy to end up using the same username/email and password combination across multiple sites. Whilst this may make things easier to remember, it can actually increase the risk of our details being compromised by cybercriminals.

Importantly, if you are using the same login and password details for your internet banking on other sites or it has been sometime since you updated your internet banking password, it is even more important to review and consider updating your password.

What is a strong password?

A strong password is difficult for hackers to guess. You should avoid using personal information, such as your name, birthday or address. You should also avoid using common words or phrases.

For Illawarra Credit Union internet banking, your password must be 8 characters or longer and contain upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters.

How do I create a strong password?

  • Make it long - your internet banking password must be at least 8 characters. In fact, longer passwords allow for a more complex set of characters in your password.
  • Mix it up - use a combination of uppercase, lowercase, numbers and special characters.
  • Don't be so predictable - avoid common words, family member names or street names etc.
  • Consider a passphase - this could be a combination of random words, numbers or symbols eg. cryst*loni#nclaypretz!l".
  • Use acronyms and substitute characters with numbers or symbols e.g. "YellowCard” becomes “Yell@wC&rd".

How do I update my Illawarra Credit Union internet banking password?

  1. Log in to internet banking using your current login credentials.
  2. Click on 'settings', then 'change password'
  3. You will be prompted to generate a one-time password SMS - click "Get SMS"
  4. Enter the code you have received via SMS, then enter in your new password. You'll need to enter this twice.
  5. Click "change password". Your new password will then be effective for all future log ins.
